The Haunted History

The Algonquin Resort opened in 1889 in the picturesque seaside town of Saint-Andrews-by-the-Sea, New Brunswick. Originally owned by the St. Andrews Land Company and later purchased by the Canadian Pacific Railway, this medieval-inspired resort is believed to be the most haunted location in New Brunswick. Located at 184 Adolphus Street, the Algonquin's architecture and coastal setting create an appropriately eerie atmosphere for the multiple spirits who call it home. The most prominent ghost resides in Room 473, where a tragic romantic disappointment created a haunting that persists to this day. An unnamed bride checked into Room 473 on what should have been her wedding day, but she had been left at the altar by her groom. The devastated woman is believed to have died of a broken heart shortly after this betrayal, though her death did not occur at the hotel itself. Nevertheless, her spirit returned to the scene of her deepest humiliation and grief. Her ghost is seen wandering the resort grounds and specifically haunting Room 473 in the dead of night, eternally moping about the place where her dreams of married happiness were shattered. Guests report hearing sobbing sounds echoing into the wee hours of the morning, the jilted bride crying throughout the night about being abandoned at the altar. The Algonquin also hosts a former staff member whose personality shines through in death as it apparently did in life. This prankster ghost, a former employee whose identity remains unknown, takes particular delight in rearranging silverware in the dining room according to her own preferences. Staff arriving for morning shifts regularly discover that table settings have been completely rearranged overnight, reset to match this ghost's exacting standards rather than the restaurant's protocols. A helpful bellhop spirit also makes appearances, materializing to assist guests to their rooms before disappearing immediately after completing his spectral service. Throughout the resort, doorknobs rattle without explanation, their handles turning as if invisible hands are testing every lock. Objects go missing from where staff and guests placed them, only to reappear in completely different areas of the property days or even weeks later, relocated by unseen forces. The combination of the weeping bride, the fastidious former staffer, the helpful bellhop, and these general poltergeist activities has secured the Algonquin Resort's reputation as New Brunswick's premier haunted hotel. The property has been featured on the television program Creepy Canada, cementing its status in Canadian paranormal lore as a location where multiple spirits from different eras continue their eternal routines.
